Earned Ground: A Real-World Approach to Confidence, Goals, and Living Fully

5/1/2025

The truth no one wants to say out loud is that confidence isn’t something you wait to feel. It’s something built, shaped, and wrestled into existence through action. Goals are easier to dream up than execute, and the phrase “living your best life” has been repeated so often, it’s become almost meaningless—unless it’s defined by personal progress, not curated aesthetics. What matters is not the big leap but the earned ground beneath your feet, the simple, imperfect steps forward that remind you of your own agency.

Look Behind the Addiction

8/8/2023

I came across a situation this weekend where someone was very intoxicated. I’m sure we have all been there a few times. But this person needed help and no one seemed concerned. All I heard was “they need help, nothing you can do to help them, we’ve tried” or “it’s their own fault” or “they brought this on themselves”. While parts of that are true, I didn’t understand why, still, we were casting stones? No, we cannot change their habits or addictions for them. But it’s no chip off our shoulder to help. This is someone masking their pain, their hurt, their damage and it’s the only way they know how. And how are they ever able to recover if they don’t feel loved? How will they ever feel valued enough if people toss them out with the trash?

Journals of an Abuse Survivor

12/31/2020

I forgive myself for being honest, for trusting too much, for forgiving again and again, for being me in a false world where values are upside down, for defending others, for trying to find some kind of justice, for trying to protect to relatives who were lost a long time ago, for trying to find some kind of coherence in our lives, for trying to find the good in others, they no longer existed, for trying to help someone who did not even see what is wrong because was lost long time ago, to try to be a family member who cares when they never see me or love me as a family, to be blind all these years and never see that...

How Stress Management and Mindfulness Can Help Treat Addiction

9/2/2020

Picture
Many people find success with traditional treatments for addiction, but the drawback of traditional methods of recovery is that they sometimes leave gaps in care. Using alternative treatments for recovery, like mindfulness, stress management, and exercise, can help fill those gaps. For some people, that means using these in place of more traditional treatments, while others find that they’re a great complement to what they’re already doing.

Animal-assisted Therapy

8/29/2019

Animal-assisted therapy isn't designed to be a stand-alone therapy. When combined with other treatments for substance use disorders, the therapeutic approach can motivate patients to stay in treatment. Animals can also help therapists and clients resolve mental health problems in a way that isn't possible with other types of therapy alone. - Jaime Acevedo, Outreach Specialist
